Peace+Joy Squared: ArtPod's seasonal square works show

One gift virtually everyone can wish for others at this time of year is peace and joy. How do you as an artist pass on your joy? Or what does peace mean to you and how can you convey that sentiment? Is joy a colour, a landscape, a portrait, a symbol, an animal, a song, a story? Is peace stillness, a sound, a simple palette, a grounding, a scent, a practice, a poem, an unshakable belief— how can you impart that?

Question: How to increase the amount of peace and joy in the world? A: YOU SQUARE IT!

The web gallery is where you can vote for your favourite piece in the show. At the end of the show's run, and if we get over 20 entries, we will tally the votes and an Online People's Choice Award will be announced!

This show also exists in real life in Metchosin, BC, Canada, at Metchosin ArtPod. We highly encourage you to come see the show in person during its run from Friday 15 November, 2024 to Sunday 22 December, 2024. People are always thrilled to have seen the show in person; it is quite a different experience from seeing it on-line. Votes for the People's Choice Award (one per visitor, over the course of the show) are made in person. 

**Note that ArtPod is open from 11am-4pm  from Fri-Sun.**

We welcome everyone to our  Opening Celebration on SATURDAY 16 November, 2024 from 2-4 pm.  Meet our juror, Carolyn Hoag, and hear how she chose the works featured in this show,  listen to accepted artists in attendance speak about their works and process, and celebrate the three Juror's Choice Winners!

Inspiration:: I've taken on the challenge of creating a piece that’s reflects peace and joy with the added criteria of the ‘square’ element. I used an abstracted approach for the square criteria and used doves as a symbol of peace. The pair of doves made me think of love and and companionship which for me gives me joy in my life.
Materials and Process:: Created in on watercolour paper on wood panel using a variety of acrylic media inks charcoal pencil and pen.

Inspiration:: The inspiration for this piece was to try to create something that symbolizes peace and highlights the idea of squares. The idea was to find a way to utilize both elements in a cohesive way and create a painting that is interesting.
Materials and Process:: Watercolour paper on wood panel using a variety of materials: collage, inks, charcoal, pencil, and acrylic.

Inspiration:: Peace and joy can be attained in many ways. Using mounted cubes as anchors, I have visualised 25 (hence, 5-squared) possibilities. The sharp outlines of the brightly coloured 3-D cubes contrasts with the fuzziness of the monochromatic 2-D figures.
Materials and Process:: Wood, acrylic paints, gilding and spray paint/stencils.

Inspiration:: The West Shore Ecology Flora and Fauna investigates and documents elements of the West Shore ecosystem within the rural District of Metchosin and the lands of the Sc’ianew First Nation, including Spirit Bay, where I reside. Informed by life along the ocean and within forest surroundings, this work reflects the presence and ecological roles of diverse biota in Vancouver Island’s landscapes. Through a creative collaboration with artificial intelligence tools, I explore and respond to the natural environment and the complicated dynamic qualities of this ecosystem.

Inspiration:: This piece was inspired by a poem by local poet dl clay. Poetry gives me peace and joy and creating an agnostic artwork to accompany a poem is always very fulfilling. This poem in particular I found very peaceful and I tried to capture the balance of it. what i have decided is a hawk brown on blue has drawn a circle in the sky outside of this room i am keeping my self in i open the window keen for the lost dove of myself for the fierce hawk of my self surrendered circle broken now no more waiting until tomorrow

Inspiration:: Nothing brings me more Peace and Joy than serving a big platter of homemade food to a group of loved ones. This platter is meant to be heaped with pasta, salad, or some other tasty dish, and put in the middle of the table, allowing everyone to help themselves... along with a nice glass of wine and lots of laughter!
