Welcome to Metchosin ArtPod's  ONLINE GALLERY for the juried show...

Peace+Joy Squared: ArtPod's seasonal square works show

One gift virtually everyone can wish for others at this time of year is peace and joy. How do you as an artist pass on your joy? Or what does peace mean to you and how can you convey that sentiment? Is joy a colour, a landscape, a portrait, a symbol, an animal, a song, a story? Is peace stillness, a sound, a simple palette, a grounding, a scent, a practice, a poem, an unshakable belief— how can you impart that?

Question: How to increase the amount of peace and joy in the world? A: YOU SQUARE IT!

The juror for this show is Carolyn Houg  Check out her work at https://theavenuegallery.com/a...

The web gallery is where you can vote for your favourite piece in the show. At the end of the show's run, and if we get over 20 entries, we will tally the votes and an Online People's Choice Award will be announced!

This show also exists in real life in Metchosin, BC, Canada, at Metchosin ArtPod. We highly encourage you to come see the show in person during its run from Friday 15 November, 2024 to Sunday 22 December, 2024. People are always thrilled to have seen the show in person; it is quite a different experience from seeing it on-line. Votes for the People's Choice Award (one per visitor, over the course of the show) are made in person.

**Note that ArtPod is open from 11am-4pm  from Fri-Sun.**

We welcome everyone to our  Opening Celebration on SATURDAY 16 November, 2024 from 2-4 pm.  Meet our juror, Carolyn Hoag, and hear how she chose the works featured in this show,  listen to accepted artists in attendance speak about their works and process, and celebrate the three Juror's Choice Winners!

Dimensions: 4 x 4 x 1.5
Inspiration:: These are four square mixed media pieces which incorporate swirls and buoyant shapes on brightly painted cradles. I often feel that joy is found in the smallest of things and moments. I wanted to create little pieces using the colours I find the most exuberant and playful. The set can be shown together in a square on the wall.
Materials and Process:: Paper, acrylics, crayons, wooden cradles. Multi layers of marks were done on watercolour paper and then applied to the painted cradles.
Accompanying music/song and artist: : What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong

CA$200.00

Dimensions: 6.5 x 6 x 6
Inspiration:: A tunnel book is a vintage book model often manufactured for special occasions. My tunnel book was created to express the idea that joy is found in what we love and I love creating playful book structures. The wired beads spell out words like "joy" "peace" and 'love" and I wanted the work to hold a surprise. When you look into the opening you can see a jeweled heart on the back wall.
Materials and Process:: Paste papers, ephemera, cradle, beads, blocks, buttons, jewels and wire all assembled into a concertina which holds the "pages".
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Tunnel of Love by Bruce Springsteen

CA$250.00

Dimensions: 12.5 x 6 x 6
Inspiration:: This is an assemblage incorporating the playful things which bring me joy - gardens, monoprints, hand sewing, bright colours and drawing with wire. The work stems from my memories of our beautiful gardens around our home and inside the constant sounds of sewing and wood crafts. Our family enjoyed the handmade and this love of creating has supported me all my life and given great joy and happiness. The title is derived from the square bases and the addition of square blocks as joy is exponential and its memory and surprises continue to always give us delightful days and hope.
Materials and Process:: This piece is constructed from one monoprint carefully cut apart and pieced together and mounted on two square bases with small square woodblocks added.
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Que Sera Sera by Doris Day
Noticing Joy

CA$500.00

Dimensions: 7 x 308 x 7
Inspiration:: This book structure incorporates pages devoted to text about joy and visual memories. I asked myself questions like what does true joy feel like and where did I feel it in my body? How could I uncover more joy in my life? The journey into noticing and appreciating joy became a diary of discovery of seeing, remembering and hearing and recording the many surprises. The process increased my awareness of the everyday and moments of wonder. The most important thing I learned was that I had to pay attention and be open to noticing.
Materials and Process:: Paper, acrylics, watercolours, collage, Posca pens, fineliners. There are 44 square pages in the book which are joined together to unfold as a concertina.
Accompanying music/song and artist: : Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell

CA$1,850.00

Dimensions: 36 x 36
Inspiration:: There is something about a road trip. From pouring over maps and ferry schedules to packing the van with my favourite music and snacks, every moment is a joy. An open road and time to myself is always a thrill. This particular image is the view looking west on Highway 1 between Banff and Lake Louise. I've taken this route hundreds of times and the majesty of the Rocky Mountains never fails to fill me with awe. While recognizing our complicated history, I remain grateful to live in a peaceful country that affords me the freedom to roam.
Materials and Process:: acrylic paint on canvas

CA$50.00

Dimensions: 9.75 x 9.75 x 1.75
Inspiration:: Most of my sculptural works are reliefs made from natural materials collected from beaches. These materials bring me peace because I gather them during stress-relieving walks. They also bring me joy because I select items that inspire whimsical works of art: in this work, a kelp holdfast becomes a ‘tree’ in a landscape. This work helps me to share peace and joy with others through not only its calming colour palette but also its various textures that add visual interest. The four, square compositions submitted can work as either individual pieces or as groupings.
Materials and Process:: kelp stipe and holdfast, driftwood, stone, bone, shell glued on to a burlap backing
Accompanying music/song and artist: : “Lough Erin Shore” by The Corrs

They also bring me joy because I select items that inspire whimsical works of art: in this work, a curved piece of driftwood becomes the base for an ‘undersea garden’. This work helps me to share peace and joy with others through not only its calming colour palette but also its various textures that add visual interest. Inspiration:: Most of my sculptural works are reliefs made from natural materials collected from beaches. These materials bring me peace because I gather them during stress-relieving walks. They also bring me joy because I select items that inspire whimsical works of art: in this work, kelp fronds seem to create a 'human wave' by their motion. This work helps me to share peace and joy with others through not only its calming colour palette but also its various textures that add visual interest. The four, square compositions submitted can work as either individual pieces or as groupings.

CA$150.00

Dimensions: 12 x 12
Inspiration:: The inspiration for “Blooming Radiance: Peony's Essence” came from the simple yet profound excitement and joy of observing a flower blooming. The peony, with its dramatic life cycle, epitomizes this sentiment. From a tight bud to a magnificent bloom, the peony's transformation is a metaphor for life’s fleeting moments and their beauty. This artwork is my homage to that journey, capturing the flower in a state of peak radiance.
Materials and Process:: Digital Photagraphy (pigment ink on fibre)
