Peace+Joy Squared: ArtPod's seasonal square works show

One gift virtually everyone can wish for others at this time of year is peace and joy. How do you as an artist pass on your joy? Or what does peace mean to you and how can you convey that sentiment? Is joy a colour, a landscape, a portrait, a symbol, an animal, a song, a story? Is peace stillness, a sound, a simple palette, a grounding, a scent, a practice, a poem, an unshakable belief— how can you impart that?

Question: How to increase the amount of peace and joy in the world? A: YOU SQUARE IT!

The web gallery is where you can vote for your favourite piece in the show. At the end of the show's run, and if we get over 20 entries, we will tally the votes and an Online People's Choice Award will be announced!

This show also exists in real life in Metchosin, BC, Canada, at Metchosin ArtPod. We highly encourage you to come see the show in person during its run from Friday 15 November, 2024 to Sunday 22 December, 2024. People are always thrilled to have seen the show in person; it is quite a different experience from seeing it on-line. Votes for the People's Choice Award (one per visitor, over the course of the show) are made in person.

We welcome everyone to our  Opening Celebration on SATURDAY 16 November, 2024 from 2-4 pm.  Meet our juror, Carolyn Hoag, and hear how she chose the works featured in this show,  listen to accepted artists in attendance speak about their works and process, and celebrate the three Juror's Choice Winners!

Inspiration:: The inspiration behind "Blush of Time" is deeply rooted in the life cycle of a flower and the joy of witnessing its transformation. Flowers are amazing in their ability to transform, grow, and eventually fade, each stage emanating its own unique grace, joy, and allure. By isolating a moment within this cycle, I aimed to celebrate the delicate transition and extraordinary details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Inspiration:: The inspiration for this piece came from a desire to explore the life cycle of a flower, infused with the joy it brings. Peonies, in particular, are recognized for their elusive beauty; they don’t readily reveal their full magnificence. In "Tender Blush," I wanted to capture that blissful moment when a peony unfurls, showcasing its intricate details and the elegant interplay of its textures and colours. The artwork invites viewers to experience the subtle nuances and the rich textures that often remain unseen by the casual observer, evoking a sense of joy in discovering hidden beauty.

Inspiration:: The inspiration behind this piece stems from my deep appreciation for the peony's vibrant colors and its transformation over time. Observing the peony's colour as it deepened and became more intense with age was a captivating experience. This transformation—from a bright, almost blinding pink to a rich, dark hue—became a central theme in my work. Capturing this metamorphosis required an acute focus on colour and detail, abundantly present in this image.

Inspiration:: In high school I had two teachers who taught art and architecture after hours where I developed my interest in design, color, art and history. I started travelling to Europe almost 35 years later and marveled at the sites in historical cities, recalling what I learned so many years ago. Notre Dame was stunning inside and out, from bottom to top including the very upper balcony next to the gargoyles on the tower. I saw this North Rose Window close up, a marvel of craftsmanship from so long ago. FYI: One of the round stained glass panels in the window would just fit into this 26" square.

Inspiration:: With a lifelong love of animals, especially African wildlife after seeing Born Free in 1966, serendipity brought me to Kenya for the first time in 2018. The wide open spaces and multitude of wildlife that I had only dreamed and read about was magical. The calm serenity of the conservancies I visited took my breath away and captured my heart and soul completely. The wild animals were so comfortable in their surroundings and as curious about me as I was about them that I was at times 5' away from lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes and so much more making Kenya the only place I wish to return to.

Inspiration:: My love of design grew as a young teenager and led me to a deep appreciation of classic cars by the time I could drive. I actually wanted to be a race car driver and mechanic! The love of old cars, their shapes, style and "personality" is evident in my photographs of details. I rarely capture the entire automobile, unless for reference, but the uniqueness of each make, model and year of production piques my interest, from the first-ever automobiles to the 60's. Only the very most distinctive cars capture my interest now.
